PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Program To be considered for admission into the Vocational Nurse or Psychiatric Technician program, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
1. Applicant must submit a completed application. It is recommended that interested applicants fill out the application with the admissions advisor. 2. Applicant must have graduated from high school, or earned a GED and be at least 18 years of age. 3. Applicant must pay all applicable fees, as per the current published fee schedule prior to the issuance of an enrollment contract or make other payment arrangements acceptable to the school. 4. Applicant must complete a Scholastic Level Exam (SLE) with a score of at least 19. 5. Completion of the prerequisite course “Essential Medical Bioscience” must be completed before starting the program. Applicants with previous medical experience may request to challenge the course test to be accepted into the program without taking the prerequisite course. 6. If enrollment openings are fewer than applicants that meet the admission requirements applicants will be asked to pass an interview with the nursing program director or program coordinator.
Ultrasound Technology Program To be considered for admission into the Ultrasound Technology Program, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
1. Applicant must submit a completed application. It is recommended that interested applicants fill out the application with the admissions advisor. 2. Applicant must have graduated from high school, or earned a GED and be at least 18 years of age. 3. Applicant must possess an Associate of Science Degree in an Allied Health field that is directed at human patient care or a Bachelor of Science or Arts Degree in any field. Student must provide official transcripts which reflect a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all college course work directly from the registrar’s office before the application will be considered complete. Copies will not be accepted. 4. Applicants holding a foreign diploma must bring proof of successful completion of an ESL class equal to ESL 26/ English 1A in the Foothill - De Anza community college system or to successfully pass TOEFL test with the following minimum scores: 560 for the PBT (paper-based test); 220 for the CBT (computer-based test); and 87 for the iBT (internet-based test). 5. Applicant must pay all applicable fees, as per the current published fee schedule prior to the issuance of an enrollment contract or must make other arrangements acceptable to the school. 6. Applicant must complete a Scholastic Level Exam (SLE) with a score of at least 30. 7. Applicants who can demonstrate 2 years of allied health education including but not limited to Nursing sciences, Radiology Technicians, Paramedics, etc., may be exempted from taking certain prerequisite courses and challenge exams by providing an official grade transcripts for each of the following courses: a. Anatomy and Physiology b. Biology c. Algebra (College Level) d. Physics (College Level) 8. Applicant must pass all of the following prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of “C” defined as a 2.0 grade point value*. a. Essential Medical Bio-Science b. Anatomy and Physiology c. Ultrasound Basic Physics and Instrumentation d. Cross-Sectional Anatomy *Applicants may request to challenge the prerequisite courses by taking and passing a challenge exam for each course after submitting an original transcript that proves equivalent coursework was successfully completed within the last 5 years and given a grade of at least 2.0 or “C”. 9. Applicant must submit an essay (no longer than two typed pages) which describes the following: a. Synopsis of their observation, experience, and the impact on their decision to pursue this career path based upon one 4 hour Ultrasound Department visit to our affiliated hospitals scheduled by the Program Director during their completion of the pre-requisites. b. Reasons for applicant’s desire to become an ultrasound technologist. c. Reasons for applying to the Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts San Mateo Campus Ultrasound Technology Program. d. Personal attributes which would contribute to the applicant’s success in the program. e. Pertinent employment, volunteer, or other experience which would support applicant’s knowledge of the medical field. 10. Applicant must comply with the Gurnick Academy requirements for Immunizations, Health Screening, Background Check, and CPR policy. 11. Applicant must pass an interview with the Ultrasound Program Director and the Associated Program Director of Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Program To be considered for admission into the MRI Technology Program, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
1. Applicant must submit a completed application. It is recommended that interested applicants fill out the application with the admissions advisor. 2. Applicant must have graduated from high school, or earned a GED and be at least 18 years of age. 3. Applicant must possess an Associate Degree in any field. Student must provide official transcripts which reflect a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all college course work directly from the registrar’s office before the application will be considered complete. Copies will not be accepted. 4. Applicant must comply with the Gurnick Academy requirements for Immunizations, Health Screening, Background Check, and CPR policy. 13. Applicant must pass an interview with the MRI Program Director of Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts.
Radiologic Technology Program To be considered for admission into the Radiologic Technology program, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
1. Applicant must submit a completed application. It is recommended that interested applicants fill out the application with the admissions advisor. 2. Applicant must have graduated from high school, or earned a GED and be at least 18 years of age. 3. Applicant must pay all applicable fees, as per the current published fee schedule prior to the issuance of an enrollment contract or make other payment arrangements acceptable to the school. 4. Applicant must complete a Scholastic Level Exam (SLE) with a score of at least 29. 5. Applicant must pass an interview with the Program Director and/or selection committee. 6. Applicant must show proof of completion (signed by department manager on facility’s letterhead) of 40 hours of volunteer or work experience in a medical imaging department. 7. Applicant must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all college course work. 8. Applicant must pass all prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of “C.” All prerequisite courses must be completed and official transcripts submitted at the time of application to the program.
PREREQUISITE COURSES & GENERAL EDUCATION For an individual to be eligible to apply to the program, the applicant must show proof of successful completion of specific prerequisite courses. These courses have content which is necessary to enable the Radiologic Technology student to understand the information given within the program curriculum and to perform successfully as a radiographer. The prerequisite courses provide a foundation on which to build upon later in the core radiologic courses.
The prerequisite courses should be college level with a minimum grade of “C” and should be within five years of the time of application. The Radiologic Technology Program Director is responsible for evaluating the validity of each course and will make a determination of eligibility based on the individual’s academic history. Official transcripts from the sponsoring institutions are required and are to be submitted in a sealed institutional envelope along with the other application materials.
The following is the list of prerequisite college-level, credit-bearing courses that must be completed with a minimum grade of “C,” and within five years of application (at the discretion of the Radiologic Technology Program Director) to establish eligibility as an applicant for the Radiologic Technology program:
a. English 1A b. Elementary Algebra c. Biology d. Chemistry e. Computer Literacy f. Medical Terminology (at least 24 instructional hours) g. Human Structure and Function: Anatomy and Physiology Survey (at least 36 instructional hours)
To be in compliance with the educational standards established by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), all graduates from the Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts Radiologic Technology program must have completed at least 15 credit hours of general education through credit-bearing courses taken at a college level and with a minimum grade of “C.” The ASRT defines that the 15 credit hours be taken from the following categories:
a. Mathematical/logical reasoning (required) b. Written/oral communications (required) c. Arts and humanities d. Information systems e. Social/behavioral sciences f. Natural sciences
Note: The ASRT establishes the curricular standards as accepted by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Students who intend to take the certification exam for radiographers from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) must complete a minimum of 15 credit hours of general education through credit-bearing courses taken at a college level and with a minimum grade of “C” in the categories listed above. The State of California Department of Public Health Radiologic Health Branch may also require this standard for 15 credit hours of general education in the future.
COURSE ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Phlebotomy Technician Course:
To be considered for admission into the Phlebotomy Technician continuing education course, the applicant must meet the following criteria: 1. Applicant must have graduated from high school, or earned a GED and be at least 18 years of age. 2. Applicant must pay all applicable fees, as per the current published fee schedule or make other payment arrangements acceptable to the school. 3. Applicant must complete a Scholastic Level Exam (SLE) with a score of at least 16. 4. Applicant must complete the enrollment agreement.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR):
To be considered for admission into the CPR course, the applicant must meet the following criteria: 1. Applicant must complete the enrollment agreement. 2. Applicant must pay all applicable fees, as per the current published fee schedule or make other payment arrangements acceptable to the school. |
