Trainings Provided Through Phlebotomist Programs

The actual physical act of puncturing a vein for the extraction of blood is known as phlebotomy. People who are being trained in blood sample extraction for the purposes of testing or for transfusion are being known as phlebotomists.

There is a high school diploma or GED being required for the enrollment into phlebotomist programs. A diploma for an accredited phlebotomy college, university, or vocational school is being required for employments in the phlebotomy field. Basic courses in preparation for required internships are being provided through the available phlebotomist programs. In as little as three months, online phlebotomy certificate and diploma programs can be completed. Obtaining associate degrees in phlebotomy may take 18 months. Longer periods for additional studies are being required for bachelor degrees from phlebotomy universities and colleges.

Studies of anatomy, physiology, and phlebotomy techniques are being provided by phlebotomist programs, plus communication skills which are meant for helping patients relax in order to make the blood draw experience as painless and positive as possible. In laboratory settings during clinical internships and/or externships of the phlebotomy programs, hands-on training in drawing blood through venipuncture and skin puncture are being required.

In order to assist doctors and nurses, phlebotomists are being employed in medical offices, clinics, and laboratories so they can focus their time and skills on blood collection. In hospitals and during blood drives, phlebotomy is being practiced most often. Performing tasks other than collection of blood can as well be expected of phlebotomists, but they do not get involved in the administration of medications or fluids through venipuncture. Some possibilities may be represented by preparing tests or collecting and testing urine samples. These skills have to be included in the trainings provided by phlebotomist programs.

When training includes an internship in a hospital or clinic setting, online phlebotomy training programs may take a year.
