Even though prerequisites vary from one radiologic technology program to another, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists has standards that all radiologic training programs must comply with. In order to graduate from X-Ray school, students must complete at least 15 credit hours of general education through credit-bearing courses taken at a college level. All of these courses must be passed with a minimum grade of "C" or better to complete the X-Ray program. Hey don't necessarily have to be taken at the same X-Ray school that the radiologic classes are taken at, but they must be taken from the following categories:
- Mathematical/logical reasoning (required)
- Written/oral communications (required)
- Arts and humanities
- Information systems
- Social/behavioral sciences
- Natural sciences.
Before a student can even be considered for an X-Ray program, they must also have completed some prerequisite college-level, credit-bearing courses with a minimum grade of "C" or better. These courses must have been taken within five years of application to the X-Ray school, and the student must have official transcripts. These are the classes that must be taken before X-Ray training begins:
- English 1A
- Elementary Algebra
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Computer Literacy. (See course outline for "Computers in Radiologic Sciences" for content.)
- Medical Terminology (at least 24 instructional hours)
- Human Structure and Function: Anatomy and Physiology Survey (at least 36 instructional hours)
These courses help students have the skills and knowledge that will prepare them to begin X-Ray training, so they will be able to comprehend the information discussed in lectures without falling behind. There are also papers that they must write and group work that they will be expected to do, so these courses ensure that the students are able to do so effectively. All of these additional courses also ensure more well-rounded, intelligent and prepared X-Ray school graduates. |
